Teaching Children How to Manage Stress

Stress Release Reminders

We sometimes forget how tough it is to be a kid. We look at our child’s life through our adult eyes. We tend to compare our adult difficulties to their more simpler yet still damaging stress.  Who is to say a women in the hospital fearing for her husband’s life is more stressful to her, then a child who is waiting in the class room to begin a grade passing test. We all experience stress, but learning at a young age, how to deal with it properly is one of the greatest gifts an adult can give to a child.

While developing my Stress Release Reminders technique, my daughter at the age of 6, asked me why I stuck  decals around the house & car. I told her they were reminders for mommy to relax, so that I would not yell so much.

This is how I explained the process:

  1. Take a deep breath – When we focus on a good deep breath. We are filling our minds with the proper oxygen we need to think more clearly, and it calms our nervous system.
  2. Relax and shake out muscle tension – Our bodies natural response to anxiety is tightening up our bodies. Clenching the jaw can lead to a headache. Tightening the shoulders can lead to neck & back pain. Clenching our fists or curling our toes can lead to pins & needle sensations or even bone disorders. Checking these areas & loosening them is crucial to our health.
  3. Center your thoughts to “What you want to accomplish most today” – Stressful situations will arise; this step will help you focus on the importance of the situation. If the thing causing stress does not get you closer to your goal, then let it go & move on.

Later the next week I noticed her looking at one of the decals and shaking out her hands. She told me she had a bad time on the bus and needed to calm herself down. She got it! She knew the importance of practicing the calming technique until it became an ingrained habit.

I think as an adult we believe that stress does not affect us, or we are simply too busy to take time out of our schedules.  We build a wall and believe we are untouchable. This is why stress is called the silent killer, because we become so accustomed to living in this state that it becomes our norm.

Teaching our children how to mange stress gives them confidence. Stress Release Reminders technique is an amazing way to help build healthy habits. I also designed a journal technique like no other. It is designed for people who wish to journal, but struggle to find the time to do it. The journal is perfect for children, because it is a fill in the blank technique. Children strive on repetition. They insert their daily goal, daily affirmation, & list just a few highlights from the day.

  • Goals, today’s children need goals & accomplishments to work for in order to stay focused to the positive.
  • Affirmations are crucial for children especially with bullying as predominant as it is. They must have the confidence in themselves to deal with today’s issues.
  • Lastly, how awesome for them to go back & see their accomplishments. This journal technique is meant to be a positive tool in achieving a healthier, happier life.

Stress Release Reminders

Why Are Americans So Stressed Out?

time

Most Americans believe they do not have time. Their schedules are much to busy, and their day-to-day health is set aside for a later time. The biggest problem is once the time finally comes, they are too exhausted to properly relieve the stress & tension. They end up collapsing in their beds for a restless night’s sleep.

There are thousands, if not millions of resources to alleviate stress, but nothing that reminds us to do it, and do it often. This is what Stress Release Reminders is all about. It is there throughout your day to remind you to slow down, relax your tension, & focus on living in the moment. Users of the product have said, that just after a month of using the technique, healthy habits are formed and positive outlook on life is achieved.

Some great resources on lowering stress are:

In her book she writes about the pathways to peace. In chapter 3 “Using the tools”, she believes the best way to lower stress is to practice calming techniques until they are an ingrained habit. She gives an example of brushing your teeth daily. We do not tell ourselves what to do throughout the entire cleaning, it is the exact sequence we have brushed twice a day, everyday. The book is a wonderful resource, but if we are not reminded each day to apply what Dr Lee prescribes, then the knowledge can become an entirely new stress of not taking care of ourselves properly.

This book is about how tension can damage your body. In the 19th Century Sir William Olser, father of modern-day medicine, pointed out the importance of treating emotional factors in physical illnesses. Since then, there have been countless publishing’s on how stress affects our health. Dr John Sarno MD, wrote a NY Times best seller “Mind Over Back Pain” It breaks down  tension and how it affects our health. He explains Tension Myostis Syndrome. Which, he believes is one of the major factors in most chronic pain sufferers. His findings are very interesting, and this is why it is so important to loosen tension so often each day. Practicing tension relief is an easy habit to form with unbelievable benefits to improve our health.

Sonia’s book is an amazing way to find your true goals in life. She explains how we create our reality by focusing our day-to-day experiences with a successful  purpose. Her breakdown on the steps of finding true joy is a wonderful journey. Once understood, Stress Release Reminders last step of the calming technique, is to center your moment to this purpose. This eliminates stressful distractions, and helps to realize experiences, not moving you forward to your goals, are not worth the time.

Now, take a look at the Stress Release Reminder’s stress management technique and you will understand how all three books prove the importance of doing these steps many times a day.

Stress Release Reminders calming technique:

  • Notice Reminder decal- Place decals in areas where you need to relax most.
  • Take a deep breath- When we focus on a good deep breath. We are filling our minds with the oxygen we need to think more clearly. It calms our nervous system and allows us to relax.
  • Relax muscle tension- Clenching the jaw can lead to tension headaches. Tightening the shoulders can lead to neck & back pain. Clenching our fists or curling our toes can lead to pins & needle sensations or even bone disorders. Checking these areas & loosening them is crucial to the process.
  • Center your mind to whats most important- What gives you the most joy from your lifetime of experiences? This centers you to your goals & makes you want to be a better person.
  • Repeat your daily affirmation- This process is for yourself, for your self pride. It does not need to be shared with others, but needs to be fully accepted by you.
  • Smile & be proud of your accomplishment-You are in charge of your mind & body. You are in control of your health. Be proud.

1 Morning Routine, 2 Perspectives

“The key to everything is patience. You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not by smashing it.” ~ Arnold H. Glasgow~

First Scenario:

A woman sets her alarm 10 minutes early. Wanting some quiet time to write down her daily goal and affirmation. Just then, her daughter walks into the room. The woman thinks to herself, rolling her eyes,  “I never get time for myself.” Frustrated, she stumbles out of bed, and yells to her daughter, “Go get ready for school.”

Once in the kitchen, still frustrated, she unintentionally dismisses conversation with her daughter. The daughter feels the tension, and watches her mother huffing & puffing.

The husband comes in, and tells her, he will be late for dinner. She immediately snaps, and begins an argument, while the daughter is listening.

He ends up leaving; tense, mad, and full of resentment. Nearly hitting the neighbors car, and gestures rudely, while he screeches his tires, and speeds through the neighborhood.

Second Scenario:

A woman sets her alarm 10 minutes early. Wanting some quiet time, to write down her daily goal and affirmation. Just then, her daughter walks into the room. The woman thinks to herself, rolling her eyes,  “I never get time for myself.” She decides to invite her daughter to come lay down with her. They discuss their plans  for the day, and decide together what they want to accomplish. Then, the mother asks her daughter “What do you like most about yourself ?” The conversation lasts for about 5 minutes and they get up to go get ready for the day.

After everyone is gone, the women takes a few minutes, to write her goal and affirmation down, in her Stress Release Reminder’s Custom Journal.

She writes:

Daily Goal~

  • “Teach my daughter patience.“

daily Affirmation~

  • “I am a very good mother.”

Highlights from today~

  • 1st, My daughter told me, “I want to be a mother  just like you, mom!”
  • 2nd, “Not cooking, my husband is bringing home my favorite carry out!” ;-)

Sometimes it is very difficult to step back for a moment, and think about what is most important in your life. In this story, the woman realizes that being a good mother, is what is most important. This is one reason why I started Stress Release Reminders. After using the technique, situations like this one, start to become habit. Being reminded many times a day, to take a deep breath, helps to think more clearly. Loosening the built up muscle tension, helps to keep better health. Then, to focus on  “What I want most in life.”

Child-Like Point of View…Where Did It Go?

Children have neither past nor future; they enjoy the present, which very few of us do.  ~Jean de la Bruyere~

Childlike-Like or befitting a child, as in innocence, trustfulness, or candor.

Remember the days when life was simple. The biggest decisions of the day were; shall I skip to my friend’s house, or walk? Or shall I dig for worms or catch fireflies? Now, as adults, we tend to worry about the future or regret our past decisions. We tend to have a hard time focusing on the moment.

One of the biggest rewards of spending time with children, is it allows you to see the world through their eyes. To go back to a time of innocence, and viewing the world as a new discovery. We can still have this, it just takes practice. It takes patience to step back, slow down, and look around. Stress Release Reminder’s stress management program reminds you to do this and maybe a helpful tool in this practice.

When you allow yourself to slow down you will discover new things.  Life does not have to be so busy, you create your mind-set.

Your schedule can still include the activities you want out of life, but looking at the environment, enjoying the surroundings, and observing nature helps you to slow down.

Childlike qualities are endless, but the ones that I wish to emulate are:

  • being present in the moment
  • letting go of worries I have no control of
  • not focusing on other people opinions of me
  • exploring my imagination and creativity
  • be more playful and allow myself to be silly and laugh
  • and live without judgment

So, like a forgotten fire, a childhood can always flare up again within us.  ~Gaston Bachelard~

Skipping, blowing bubbles, swinging on a park swing, making a snow angel, watching the clouds go by, picking clovers to make a necklace, playing a sport, watching a bird make its nest, digging for worms, catching fireflies, are all great past times. Try stepping out of your adult shoes, go barefoot and relive these cherished memories.
